One of the most commonly asked questions in our practice is whether braces hurt our patients
In the first appointment, there is no pain when cementing the braces to the teeth. You will be introduced to your journey with braces comfortably. Some mild discomfort can usually start after the first few hours when the orthodontic wire is placed into the brackets, which may last for a few days to a week.
AAA Orthodontics patients do experience some discomfort after appointments. But the orthodontic appliances they use are cutting edge and use light force that does decrease soreness. Some mild pain is still anticipated, but patients will gradually adapt to the discomfort associated with the orthodontic tooth movement.
Dr Peter McMahon has put together what you should expect when beginning your journey with your brand new braces, from when you leave the practice, to your follow up appointments.
The first couple of days after you’ve gotten your braces
After Dr McMahon has placed your braces the adhesive will dry after 24 hours. So, it’s important to eat soft foods for the first few days to reduce the harm to your teeth and braces. It may feel strange when eating with your new braces, some recommended foods include:
- Boiled vegetables
- Soft bread
AAA Orthodontics will show you how to use the supplied dental wax to apply over your braces. This dental wax creates a smooth surface to ease irritation and painful ulcers on the inner cheeks and lips from your new braces. Over the counter pain relief, (if no allergies exist) paired with a thorough regiment of salt-water rinses can also reduce the soreness and mild discomfort.
Beyond week one
After about a week, any initial discomfort and soreness you felt should be gone or very much improved. By this point, you should be more used to having braces on your teeth and you shouldn’t notice them as much. By the 7th or 8th day the inside of your mouth should have strengthened and you shouldn’t have to use the dental wax anymore.
Patients are usually completely used to their braces after a week or two. Your teeth should have settled in and the pain in your jaw will slowly diminish. You will begin to not notice the braces and eating and talking should return to normal. It’s common to occasionally feel as though your teeth are loose when you’re wearing braces, however, this sensation is normal as your teeth are slowly and progressively repositioning themselves.
Every six weeks AAA Orthodontics will schedule an appointment to get your braces tightened or adjusted. These adjustments and tightening can be somewhat painful, although to a lesser degree than your first week with braces and only for a shorter time. Over the counter pain, medication can be taken as prescribed to alleviate the pain for a day or so.
