Teenage Orthodontic Treatments

Teen Orthodontics at AAA Orthodontics

AAA Orthodontics, Brisbane understands the significance of a good teenage orthodontic treatment and offer several options for the whole family.

Each treatment is designed to provide optimal results whether it’s for your little one, teenager, or yourself.

Whilst many parents wait for a problem to occur before taking their child to the dentist, it is recommended that your child begin their dental visits from as young as 1 year old. This gives your dentist the opportunity to monitor your child’s teeth growth and identify any potential problem areas early on.

If issues do arise, your dentist will be able to offer advice for proper treatment and care and in most cases orthodontic treatments begin as young as 9 years old.

Orthodontic treatments can be embarrassing for some teenagers, but it is important to get their oral and dental issues corrected at this young age, so they can enjoy better dental health later on in life.

Why Teen Orthodontics?

Its noticeable that many orthodontic treatments occur during a child’s teenage years. By the time your child hits their teen years, all their baby teeth would have fallen out. Whilst this is dependent on each child, a majority of children lose all their baby teeth between 11 and 13 years old. This is also when most (if not all) of their permanent teeth have come in.

Most dentists will recommend orthodontic treatment at this age to properly correct problems such as malocclusion (bad bite), crooked teeth, or improper teeth spacing.

Any dentist or orthodontist will tell you that dental problems don’t usually get resolved without intervention and in fact, becomes harder to treat as you age.

This is why dental professionals will advise beginning orthodontic treatment in your child’s teenage years. During these years, their bodies and bones, including teeth and jaws experience rapid growth and development.

In adults, the bones are fully developed, making it far more difficult and costly to treat and correct. During adolescence, tooth structures are not set in place yet, making teenage orthodontic treatments more effective thanks to the flexible nature of the teeth. Since the teeth are less resistant to movement, teenage orthodontic treatments take less time than adult orthodontics, however this needs to be done before the age of 20 for it to be as effective.

Orthodontic Options for Teens

AAA Orthodontics understands your teenager’s need for a straighter, brighter smile and therefore have several treatment options specifically for teens. Our team of professionals are trained to understand your teen’s needs and will help by offering the best advice on which treatment would work the best for your child:

  1. Braces: Most teenagers are fitted with traditional metal braces which are highly effective at straightening teeth. The brackets are bonded to the front of the teeth, fitted with an arch wire and rubber bands which slowly push the teeth to a more desirable position. They can be customised with colourful rubber bands to give your teen a more stylish look. When used in teenage years, braces are highly efficient in moving the teeth, making treatment time quicker.
  1. Clear/Ceramic Braces: If your teen doesn’t want to draw attention to their mouth with colourful bands and metal braces, they can opt for clear/ceramic braces. These braces work in the same way as metal braces except that they are more discreet. The brackets are clear or tooth-coloured making them barely noticeable.
  1. Lingual Braces: Lingual braces (also known as Incognito braces) work similarly to regular braces. They are designed to put pressure on the teeth to effectively move it to your desired position. The major difference between lingual and traditional braces is that lingual braces are fitted to the inside surface of your teeth (as opposed to the outside). This offers more discretion for the user giving them more confidence.
  1. Invisalign for Teens: This treatment is one of the more popular treatment options amongst both adults and teenagers. It uses of a series of clear plastic, removable aligners which are custom-designed for your teeth. Invisalign works in the same way as braces as it uses gentle pressure to slowly move teeth into place. This treatment is virtually invisible thanks to the clear plastic aligners which can be removed to eat or when attending a function (although they need to be used for at least 22 hours a day).
