Gone are the days of clunky metal braces, Incognito lingual braces are virtually invisible and provide an alternative to traditional braces
Incognito™ Lingual Braces from 3M provide a great alternative to traditional metal braces. Hidden behind your teeth, Incognito braces are virtually invisible and custom-made to fit your teeth.
Incognito is fast becoming one of the more popular choices for teeth straightening throughout Australia and across the world. It combines the latest technology with patients genuine concerns. This provides you with the most effective and inconspicuous orthodontic treatment on the market.
What is the Incognito lingual braces process?
At your first appointment with AAA orthodontics, we will address your dental concerns and smile aspirations. Which may include factors such as over/under bites and the way you want your teeth to look.
Dr Peter McMahon will then examine your oral situation. This includes teeth, face and jaw measurements. He will then advise what options will suit your oral condition, and whether you are ready for treatment to start.
Provided you meet the requirements for Incognito lingual treatment, Dr McMahon will record a diagnostic model, take a precise silicone impression of your teeth and create a unique bracket prescription. He will then give you a detailed and comprehensive treatment plan.
The bracket prescription, along with the silicone impression, will be sent to the Incognito Appliance System Laboratory. They will create a treatment plan specifically tailored to suit you and your teeth.
The laboratory will then create a digital model according to Dr McMahons specifications and suggested treatment plan.
The brackets are then custom-made using a wax printer and cast in gold. The arch wires are fabricated and bent to the size using robotic technology. They are then polished and fitted to a bonding tray. Within 6-8 weeks, your Incognito braces are delivered to AAA orthodontics ready for fitting.

Incognito™ Lingual Braces FAQs
Incognito is an Italian word that originated from the Latin term incognitus, which translates to: ‘to have one’s true identity concealed’. That’s exactly what happens when you have your Incognito braces fitted; they are concealed behind your teeth.
Incognito braces work similarly to traditional metal braces, but they are placed behind your teeth, so they are virtually invisible when you smile.
Here at AAA Orthodontics, we believe that straight teeth equal a healthy smile. Sometimes for families, obtaining straight teeth can be a little tricky. That’s why our fee schedule is flexible and can be arranged to suit most family budgets with payments spread out over the treatment time.
All our fees and treatment schedules will be discussed in your first consultation to ensure that you and your family are educated and informed every step of the treatment process.
Because Incognito braces are hidden on the back of your teeth, this makes them incredibly popular, but it also means they can be a little trickier to clean. The last thing you need when you take your Incognito braces off is to be left with cavities and gum disease.
Undergoing orthodontic treatment means you will need to be a little more attentive with your oral routine. Here are some handy tricks to keep your Incognito braces extra clean:
Use appropriate floss – Floss your teeth with an interdental cleaner to clean between your braces.
Buy a good quality toothbrush – This will help to ensure that you’re removing all the plaque build-up between your teeth. The team at AAA Orthodontics can advise you on what toothbrush to buy when you come in for your appointment.
Clean as you go – If you brush and floss only at night and in the mornings, try adding a few more rounds in during the day – like after eating lunch.
Visit us regularly – Come in and see us for your scheduled appointments to keep your pearly whites in tiptop condition.
After you initially get your lingual braces, you may experience some discomfort and speech impediments. To help alleviate your lisp or mispronunciations, you will be given a poem (The Rainbow Poem) to recite. Practicing the poem aloud 3 times a day for a few days should help alleviate your lisp and return your speech to normal. Discomfort and speech problems are completely normal and should resolve in a few days after having your braces fitted.
As with any other orthodontic treatment, you will be required to visit your dentist or orthodontist throughout the duration of your treatment to check that it is working well and according to plan. With lingual braces, you will need to visit your dentist at least once every 3 – 6 weeks to ensure that any tightening and adjustments are made for proper tooth movement to occur. It is therefore very important that you attend each appointment on time.
Lingual braces treatment time will depend on your individual needs and lifestyle factors. On average, treatment time takes 12 – 18 months to complete but if your misalignment is quite severe, then it could take longer. On the other hand, if your misalignment is not too bad or you are only straightening mild crowding, your treatment could take as little as 6 months. Your specific treatment time will be determined by your dentist or orthodontist during your consultation.
If you are looking for an inconspicuous way to straighten just your front teeth, then lingual braces can help. The braces can be made to fit only the front set of teeth which usually results in a quicker and more affordable treatment.
